--- title: "What Shopify apps really cost a UK shop" description: "A UK shop can run on free Shopify apps, but VAT at 20% and per-order fees change the real bill. Here is what 'free to install' actually costs in pounds." date: 2026-09-16 lastUpdated: 2026-09-16 author: "Daniel Whitmore" url: https://storeguides.uk/shopify-apps-cost-uk/ site: "Store Guides UK (storeguides.uk)" language: en --- # What Shopify apps really cost a UK shop ![A cardboard box with a white label sits on a dark desk beside a black safe, a card reader, a stack of papers, and a glass jar of coins.](https://storeguides.uk/images/shopify-apps-cost-uk-cover-1200.webp) > **The short answer:** a UK shop can run a serious app stack for £0 a month, but "free" usually means free to install, not free to run. The real cost is the monthly fee plus VAT on most goods in the UK, according to [Stripe's 2025 guidance](https://stripe.com/resources/more/vat-and-dropshipping-in-the-uk-registration-tax-rates-and-compliance-explained). It also includes whatever the app skims from each order and the time you lose when a free tool forces you to upgrade. Online sales made up 28.3% of UK retail in July 2026, according to the [Office for National Statistics](https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/retailindustry/bulletins/retailsales/july2026), and UK online spending values were 11.0% higher than a year earlier. The app stack behind your checkout matters. This guide prices the apps Shopify pushes at UK shops and gives you a test for when a paid subscription earns its keep. Most shop owners open the [Shopify App Store](https://www.shopify.com/uk/app-store) looking for a feature. They leave with a monthly bill. Heads up: this guide uses Shopify affiliate links. Sign up through one and we are paid a commission, and you pay exactly the same as you would otherwise. Shopify plans, pricing and features change; always verify the current details on shopify.com before deciding. The "free to install" badge is the most expensive label in the directory. The cost arrives later, in a transaction percentage, a plan upgrade, or a dollar invoice that becomes heavier when the VAT lands. UK online spending values rose by 3.0% in the three months to July 2026, [ONS data shows](https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/retailindustry/timeseries/j4mc/drsi). Your app stack is doing more work than a year ago. If you are still setting up, [setting up a Shopify shop in the UK](https://storeguides.uk/shopify-uk-setup-guide/) covers the basics. For the wider bill, see [what Shopify costs per month in the UK](https://storeguides.uk/shopify-cost-per-month-uk/) and [Shopify plans compared for a UK shop](https://storeguides.uk/shopify-plans-uk/). ## Table of contents - [Why 'free' is the most expensive app category](#why-free-is-the-most-expensive-app-category) - [What Shopify's official UK app collections pull to the top](#what-shopifys-official-uk-app-collections-pull-to-the-top) - [Postage apps: the second bill you don't notice](#postage-apps-the-second-bill-you-dont-notice) - [Email and review apps: when the free plan is enough](#email-and-review-apps-when-the-free-plan-is-enough) - [Dropshipping and marketplace apps: where the per-order cut hides](#dropshipping-and-marketplace-apps-where-the-per-order-cut-hides) - [SEO, design and currency apps: the quiet subscriptions](#seo-design-and-currency-apps-the-quiet-subscriptions) - [Instalment apps compared: Klarna, Clearpay and PayPal Pay in 3](#instalment-apps-compared-klarna-clearpay-and-paypal-pay-in-3) - [The Shopify app test for UK shops: when a subscription earns its keep](#the-shopify-app-test-for-uk-shops-when-a-subscription-earns-its-keep) - [Frequently asked questions](#frequently-asked-questions) - [Sources](#sources) ## Why 'free' is the most expensive app category The Shopify App Store lists thousands of apps. Most carry one of three badges: "Free to install", "Free plan available", or "Free trial". None of those means free to run. "Free to install" means no upfront charge. The app bills per transaction, per order, or per email sent. A postage app that charges a fee per label is free to install and costs you every time a customer buys. "Free plan available" means a tier with limits. A reviews app free up to a certain number of orders a month starts charging the moment your shop grows past that limit. The free plan is a trial by another name. VAT makes it worse. VAT is charged at 20% on most goods in the UK, according to [Stripe's 2025 guidance on VAT and dropshipping](https://stripe.com/resources/more/vat-and-dropshipping-in-the-uk-registration-tax-rates-and-compliance-explained). App subscriptions from overseas developers are no exception. An app billed from the United States lands on your statement as the base price plus VAT, converted to pounds at your card provider's rate. You must register for UK VAT if your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in 12 months, as [Stripe's VAT threshold guide](https://stripe.com/gb/resources/more/what-is-the-uk-vat-threshold-what-businesses-need-to-know) confirms. Once registered, you pay VAT on your app subscriptions. For a deeper look, see our guide to [VAT on a Shopify shop](https://storeguides.uk/vat-shopify-uk/). The cheapest stack is the deliberate one. No paid app until the paid app costs less than the problem it removes. ## What Shopify's official UK app collections pull to the top Shopify maintains curated collections on its App Store, including "Popular in UK" and "Useful apps for UK". These surface apps by category with star ratings, review counts, and pricing badges. Neither Shopify nor the App Store publishes average UK app spend by industry. The collection is a starting point, not a price guide. The categories pushed to the top reflect what UK shops need: Royal Mail integration, VAT-compliant invoicing, GDPR-ready cookie consent, and instalment payments. These are infrastructure, not optional extras. The "Built for Shopify" badge signals apps that meet Shopify's quality standards for performance, security, and design. An app without the badge is not necessarily bad, but one with it has passed a review process. It is the closest thing the App Store has to an editorial filter. Shopify's own first-party apps — Shop Pay, Shopify Email, Shopify Inbox — provide core functions at no monthly cost. They are the genuine free tier. The catch: they cover only the basics. Anything beyond that and you are in the paid-app market. Neither collection mentions VAT, Making Tax Digital, or the fact that Shop Pay Installments is not available in the UK. That gap is why this guide exists. For more on the platform itself, see [what Shopify is and how it works in the UK](https://storeguides.uk/what-is-shopify-uk/). ## Postage apps: the second bill you don't notice Postage and fulfilment apps are the most common paid add-on for UK shops. A "free to install" label means the app costs nothing until you generate a label. Then you pay per parcel. Royal Mail's published rates set the floor. The app adds a markup, a per-label fee, or both. A shop sending a set number of parcels a month at a fixed price per label pays a specific amount before the postage itself. Add VAT at 20% on most goods in the UK and the label fee increases. Some apps bundle a free plan with a monthly cap and charge per label above it. The free plan is enough for a shop in its first months. It stops being enough the week orders double. For sending parcels to the EU after Brexit, customs declarations, HS codes, and IOSS registration are not optional. The [European Commission's One Stop Shop portal](https://vat-one-stop-shop.ec.europa.eu/one-stop-shop_en) handles VAT registration for EU sales. Apps like Zonos handle customs documentation and duty calculation, with monthly subscriptions that can run into three figures. The rule: a postage app earns its keep when it saves you more time per week than its monthly cost divided by four. Below that line, print labels manually. For more on the platform, see [how Shopify works for a UK shop owner](https://storeguides.uk/how-shopify-works-uk/). ## Email and review apps: when the free plan is enough Email and SMS marketing apps are where the free plan genuinely works. Shopify Email includes a set number of free monthly sends on the Basic plan. For smaller shops with low monthly order volumes, that ceiling is generous. Klaviyo, the most recommended paid email app, offers a free tier for a limited number of contacts and monthly sends. Above that, pricing scales with contact count. A shop with 2,000 contacts pays a monthly subscription, plus VAT, because Klaviyo bills from the United States. Reviews apps follow the same pattern. Shopify's Product Reviews app is free and basic. Judge.me and Loox offer free plans with limits on the number of reviews, a branded widget, and no photo uploads — and paid plans from around £15 a month. The free plan is the right call until reviews become a conversion bottleneck, not before. SMS is different. Texts cost money per send, and UK rates are higher than US rates. The free plan on most SMS apps covers a handful of sends. Beyond that, the bill scales with every campaign. The [Department for Business and Trade's SME tech adoption report](https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/688a438aff8c05468cb7b0f0/sme_tech_adoption_dbt_report.pdf) notes that smaller businesses adopt digital tools incrementally, starting with free tiers before committing to paid plans. That is the right instinct for email and reviews. ## Dropshipping and marketplace apps: where the per-order cut hides Dropshipping apps are where the per-order cut does the most damage. DSers, the most installed dropshipping app on the App Store, has a free plan that caps products and orders. The paid tier removes the caps and adds a monthly subscription. Spocket charges a monthly fee and takes a margin on the products it sources. The markup is built into the wholesale price, so the cost is invisible until you compare the Spocket price with the same product elsewhere. Marketplace and sales-channel apps — Amazon, eBay, Etsy, TikTok Shop — sync products and orders across platforms. Shopify's own channel apps for Facebook, Instagram, and Google are free. Third-party sync apps charge monthly subscriptions that scale with order volume and channel count. The hidden cost is the failed sync. A product that sells out on Amazon but not on Shopify leads to overselling, cancelled orders, and complaints. The monthly fee is the cheap part. The stock discrepancy that costs you a customer is the expensive part. The [Office for National Statistics](https://www.ons.gov.uk/businessindustryandtrade/business/businessservices/bulletins/businessinsightsandimpactontheukeconomy/8january2026) reported that 25% of UK businesses used some form of AI technology in late December 2025. Dropshipping and marketplace apps increasingly use AI for product matching, but the technology does not eliminate sync errors. Where Shopify offers a built-in channel, use it. The free channel app is maintained by Shopify and syncs reliably. Pay for a third-party alternative only when the built-in channel does not cover the platform you need. ## SEO, design and currency apps: the quiet subscriptions These apps add a monthly subscription cost without an obvious per-order benefit. SEO apps optimise meta tags and generate schema markup. Currency converters display prices in multiple currencies. Theme add-ons add features your theme lacks. The rule: a core setting should not need an app. Shopify's admin handles meta titles, canonical tags, and sitemaps natively. A well-built theme handles structured data. Multi-currency is built into Shopify Payments for shops selling internationally. Before paying for an app that does what the admin already does, check the admin. Currency conversion apps were essential before Shopify Payments supported multiple currencies. Now they are redundant for most shops. The exception: shops needing display currencies outside Shopify's supported list. SEO apps charge monthly subscriptions for tasks that are mostly one-time setup. Once meta tags are written and the sitemap submitted, the recurring work is minimal. An audit tool you run once does not need a monthly subscription. GDPR compliance apps — cookie consent banners, consent logging, data residency — are a UK-specific category where the free plan is usually enough. Shopify's own privacy policy generator and cookie consent app cover the basics. Paid GDPR apps add consent records stored in the EU, which matters if you process EU customer data. The UK's tax gap was £46.8 billion in the 2023–2024 tax year, equivalent to 5.3% of total tax liabilities, according to [Stripe's Making Tax Digital guide](https://stripe.com/gb/resources/more/making-tax-digital-in-the-uk). Compliance failures are expensive, but compliance apps should not be. ## Instalment apps compared: Klarna, Clearpay and PayPal Pay in 3 BNPL — Buy Now, Pay Later — is expected by UK shoppers. Three providers dominate: Klarna, Clearpay, and PayPal Pay in 3. Each lets the customer split a purchase into interest-free payments. The merchant gets paid upfront, minus a transaction fee. The customer pays no interest. The cost sits with the merchant. Shop Pay Installments, Shopify's built-in BNPL option, is not available in the UK. That leaves the three third-party providers. For the wider payment landscape, see [UK payment methods: cards, PayPal, open banking and Klarna](https://storeguides.uk/uk-payment-methods-shopify/). | Provider | Merchant fee structure | What the customer pays | UK-specific notes | Our take on a £50 order | |---|---|---|---|---| | Klarna | Per-transaction %, no monthly fee | 3 interest-free payments | Separate Klarna checkout; available via Shopify Payments | Cheapest to enable if already on Shopify Payments | | Clearpay | Per-transaction %, no monthly fee | 4 payments, first at checkout | Integrated Shopify checkout; strong in UK fashion | Best for fashion shops with lower AOV | | PayPal Pay in 3 | Per-transaction %, no monthly fee | 3 interest-free payments | No separate checkout; runs through PayPal | Worth enabling if PayPal is already connected | All three charge the merchant a percentage per transaction. The exact rate varies by agreement and is published on each provider's merchant pricing page. None charges a monthly subscription to the merchant. The customer pays nothing as long as they make payments on time. The arithmetic that matters is VAT on your app subscriptions. Take an app that bills £20 a month. Add VAT at 20% and the real cost is £24. Over a year, that single app costs £288. Five apps at that price and your stack costs £1,440 a year, before a single order is processed. > **Our take:** enabling all three BNPL providers costs nothing per month in subscription, only per-transaction percentages. Our call is to start with whichever integrates with your existing checkout — Klarna if you use Shopify Payments, or PayPal if you already accept PayPal. Add Clearpay only if customers are abandoning at checkout without it. The per-transaction fee is the same order of magnitude as your card processing fee. Whether the conversion lift covers it depends on your average order value and your customer base. ## The Shopify app test for UK shops: when a subscription earns its keep Every paid app should pass a test before you install it. The test is arithmetic, not instinct. **Our suggested paid-app decision checklist** 1. What problem does this app solve? Write one sentence. 2. What does the problem cost you per month without the app? Multiply hours saved by your hourly rate, or lost orders by your average order value. 3. What does the app cost per month including VAT? Monthly fee × 1.2. 4. Is the answer to 3 less than the answer to 2? If yes, install. If no, do not. 5. Re-check in 90 days. Has the problem changed? Has the app's pricing changed? The VAT multiplier is the part most shop owners miss. An app advertised at a certain monthly rate costs more once VAT is included. A shop running eight apps at that price pays a significant monthly and annual amount, before any per-transaction fees. If no existing app solves the problem, a custom build is the alternative. UK developers and agencies quote in the thousands of pounds for a custom Shopify app, plus a monthly maintenance bill. Before going custom, check whether a theme customisation or a Shopify Functions script can achieve the same result for less. The cheapest stack is not the free stack. It is the stack where every app has passed the test above. A free app that wastes an hour a week is more expensive than a paid app that saves it. ## Frequently asked questions ### Are Shopify app prices shown in GBP or USD? Most apps on the Shopify App Store list prices in US dollars. The App Store may display a converted figure, but your card statement will show the original dollar amount plus your bank's conversion rate and any foreign transaction fees. Always check the pricing section on each app's listing page before installing. ### Do UK merchants pay VAT on top of Shopify app fees? Yes. VAT at 20% applies to app subscriptions from overseas developers if your shop is VAT-registered. If you are VAT-registered, you can typically reclaim the VAT as input tax on your VAT return, so the net cost may be lower than it first appears. If you are not VAT-registered, the 20% is a sunk cost. ### Which Shopify apps are genuinely free with no transaction fees? Shopify's first-party apps — Shopify Email, Shopify Inbox, Product Reviews, and the Shop channel — are genuinely free with no per-transaction charges. Third-party apps labelled "free plan available" almost always have a paid tier that caps contacts, orders, or features. The "Built for Shopify" badge signals quality, not free pricing. ### How much does a custom Shopify app cost to build in the UK? UK agencies typically quote in the thousands of pounds for a custom app, plus ongoing maintenance. Get at least three quotes and specify whether maintenance is included in the price. ### What happens to my app billing if I pause my Shopify shop? When you place your shop on a paused plan, Shopify pauses platform billing, but app billing depends on how each developer charges. Apps that bill through Shopify's billing system are paused; apps that bill independently through their own platform may continue to charge. Uninstall apps you do not need before pausing to avoid surprises. ### Can I get a refund if I uninstall a Shopify app mid-month? Shopify's app billing is not always pro-rated. Some developers offer refunds for unused time; others do not. Check the app's refund policy on its listing page before subscribing, and uninstall before the next billing date rather than after to avoid being charged for another cycle. ## Sources 1.
