ShipEasy first hour setup on Shopify UK

ShipX, listed as ShipEasy, handles UK Shopify shipping in under an hour. Build one UK-wide zone with Royal Mail, Evri and DPD rates. The free plan is enough.

The short answer: yes, you can finish a workable ShipEasy set-up in under an hour, and the free plan is enough to do it. ShipEasy is the app Shopify Inc.'s App Store currently lists as ShipX, so search for ShipX if the listing name confuses you. Build one UK-wide zone with weight-based Royal Mail, Evri and DPD rates. Add separate England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland rates only when a remote-postcode surcharge makes them necessary. You do not need Shopify's Carrier Calculated Shipping API unless you want live delivery dates in the checkout, because ShipEasy's own rate tables handle the first hour.

Here at Store Guides UK, this walkthrough is for UK merchants who have a Shopify shop open and need to configure postage before their first real order. If you are still at the platform-choice stage, What is Shopify, and how does it work in the UK? covers the basics. Setting up a Shopify shop in the UK: the full guide walks through the full sign-up sequence.

The ONS's internet sales series, released on 21 August 2026, tracks online retail as a share of all UK retail spending. A new shop at launch handles a handful of orders a day, not thousands. That volume shapes what you need from a shipping app in your first hour: a clear rate table, not a carrier integration suite.

ShipEasy or ShipX? The same app, with a listing-name mismatch

The Shopify App Store lists this app as "ShipX — Shipping Rates & Rules" at https://apps.shopify.com/shipping-rates. Its own screens and older documentation call it ShipEasy. Same product, same developer, same install. The name changed; the app did not.

This matters because the App Store search bar is where most merchants start. Type "ShipEasy" and you may see a different app first, or nothing relevant. Type "ShipX" and the correct listing appears.

The app does one job: shipping rates and rules without code. Free shipping thresholds, flat rates, weight bands, price bands, postcode zones, product-specific rules. You install it, connect your store, configure zones and rate rules, run a test order, and stop.

Skip in the first hour: overlapping rules, carrier-calculated real-time rates, postcode surcharges. Those are second-week tasks.

What to prepare before your first hour with ShipEasy

Three decisions make or break your set-up speed. Get them wrong and the hour doubles.

First, your dispatch postcode. ShipEasy uses it as the origin for every rate calculation. If you post from a fulfilment centre rather than home, use that postcode.

Second, product weights. You need the packed weight, not the item weight. A 200g candle in a box with padding weighs more than 200g. Guess low and you subsidise the difference on every order.

Third, your carrier list. Royal Mail for small packets under 2kg. Evri for larger parcels. DPD for tracked next-day. Pick two for the first hour, not all four.

Our suggested first-hour checklist, copy it and fill in your own values:

  • Dispatch postcode: ____
  • Lightest product packed weight: ____ g
  • Heaviest product packed weight: ____ g
  • Carrier 1 (small packets): ____
  • Carrier 2 (larger parcels): ____
  • Free shipping threshold: £____
  • Flat rate for UK standard: £____

If you have not yet registered your business, that comes first. Companies House charges £100 to incorporate a limited company digitally, according to the GOV.UK changes to UK company law campaign, 2026. Paper filing costs £124, and same-day digital incorporation is £156 but only through software. Shipping configuration comes after the company exists.

Skip the shipping app if your shop does not need it yet

Not every shop needs ShipX on day one. If you sell one product type, post everything at one flat rate, and your market is the UK only, Shopify's native shipping settings do the job.

Native settings handle flat rates, free shipping thresholds, and weight-based rates for a single zone. ShipX earns its install when you need postcode logic, multiple carrier comparisons, or product-specific rules that native settings cannot express.

Statista, 2026 expects 4.1 billion eCommerce users worldwide by 2030, with user penetration rising from 57.1% in 2026 to 60.1% by 2030. That growth sounds urgent. A shop at launch handles a handful of orders a day. The Baymard Institute, 2026 found the average e-commerce site has 32 checkout improvements to make and can potentially lift conversion by 35% through better checkout UX. Your first hour is better spent on a clean checkout than on shipping complexity nobody has asked for yet.

If your What does Shopify cost per month in the UK? calculation is already tight, adding a paid app subscription before you need it is cost without return.

Build one UK zone with Royal Mail, Evri and DPD

This is the core of your first hour. One zone, one rate table, weight bands set by carrier logic.

In ShipEasy, a zone is a group of countries or postcodes sharing the same rate rules. For the UK, build one zone covering every postcode from KW1 to TR27. Do not split England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland into separate zones. That is four rate tables to maintain instead of one, and the surcharges that make splitting worthwhile will not appear until you have real orders from remote postcodes.

  1. Open ShipEasy and create a zone named "UK" covering the United Kingdom.
  2. Add a weight-based rate table with three bands: under 1kg, 1 to 2kg, over 2kg.
  3. Set the under-1kg rate to your Royal Mail large letter or small parcel price.
  4. Set the 1 to 2kg band to your Evri standard parcel rate.
  5. Set the over-2kg band to your DPD rate for heavier parcels.
  6. Add a free shipping rule at your chosen threshold, say £50.
  7. Save the zone and move to the test order.

Royal Mail's published rates show a stepped structure by weight and size. Evri's pricing is negotiated per account, so your rate card differs from the next merchant's. DPD's published rates include a tracked next-day service with surcharges for highlands and islands. You do not need exact carrier API integration for the first hour. You need your negotiated rate card and a weight band covering your product range.

The Baymard Institute, 2026 global average cart abandonment rate is 70.19%. Unexpected delivery charges at checkout are a top reason customers abandon. A clear weight-based rate table shown early reduces that surprise.

The free plan does UK postcodes, Europe and worldwide

The App Store listing shows a free plan and paid tiers. According to the listing checked on 30 August 2026, the free plan covers rate rules, multiple zones, and postcode-based logic, and the paid tiers start at $9.99 a month. Paid tiers add carrier-calculated real-time rates, delivery-date display at checkout, and package-dimension calculations. Prices can change; the App Store listing is the authoritative source.

If you add European or worldwide zones in the first hour, you are extending scope before the UK zone is tested. The free plan supports those zones, so the upgrade question is about features, not geography. Cross-border VAT is the real complication.

The OECD Publishing, 2016 International VAT/GST Guidelines record that about 165 countries operated a VAT when the Guidelines were completed. Ship to the EU and you enter a VAT regime the European Commission, 2021 says its One Stop Shop can simplify, cutting cross-border VAT red tape by up to 95%. Neither fact changes your first hour. They change your second week.

The free plan is the correct starting point for a UK shop at launch. Paid tiers earn their fee only when you need live carrier rates or delivery-date display at checkout, and neither is a first-hour task. Build your UK zone on the free tier, run a test order, and revisit the upgrade when order volume or delivery complaints make it pressing.

The app bills in USD through Shopify's invoice. UK merchants see the card provider's GBP conversion, and VAT at 20% may apply on the subscription. For the broader picture, see VAT on a Shopify shop: a UK guide. The exact GBP cost depends on the exchange rate on the billing date, so a USD-priced subscription fluctuates against your GBP revenue.

When separate rates for England, Scotland, Wales and NI make sense

One UK zone works until it doesn't. The moment it stops is when a courier adds a surcharge you cannot absorb.

Royal Mail does not surcharge the highlands and islands. Evri and DPD do. DPD's published rates include a postcode-based surcharge for areas classified as "Extended." Ship a 3kg parcel to the Isle of Mull and DPD may charge more than your UK zone quoted the customer.

That is when a postcode override earns its place. ShipEasy lets you add a rule for specific postcode ranges: charge £2 extra for IM, HS, ZE, KW, AB postcodes. You add the override inside the existing UK zone, not as a separate zone.

Splitting into four Shopify zones by home nation is over-engineering. Borders do not determine delivery cost. Postcodes do. A parcel to central Edinburgh costs the same as one to central London on every major UK carrier. A parcel to Shetland costs more regardless of which home nation it sits in.

The Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 came into force on 13 June 2014, replacing the Distance Selling Regulations (legislation.gov.uk, 2013). They require clear delivery charges before the customer pays. A single UK zone with transparent weight bands meets that duty. Four zones with overlapping rules make it harder, not easier.

A five-minute test order before you go live

The set-up is not finished until a real checkout confirms it. Five minutes of testing saves a week of complaints.

Place a test order for your lightest product. Check the shipping rate at checkout matches the band you set. Place a second for your heaviest product. Check the rate steps up correctly. Place a third that triggers your free shipping threshold. Check the delivery charge drops to zero.

The Baymard Institute, 2026 benchmark of 344 top-grossing e-commerce sites found 65% have a "mediocre" or worse checkout. Only 2% rated "good." A clear shipping rate, correctly calculated, is one of the few checkout elements you fully control. Test it before a real customer finds the error.

If you also use Shopify Payments, the test checkout exercises the payment flow alongside the shipping rate. Our Shopify Payments in the UK: fees and setup guide covers that configuration separately. Shipping and payment are independent systems, but the test order touches both.

Frequently asked questions

Is ShipEasy the same as ShipX?

Yes. The Shopify App Store lists the app as "ShipX — Shipping Rates & Rules." The app's own interface used the name ShipEasy before the listing was renamed. Same developer, same codebase, same install. If you installed it before the rename, you already have the right app; no reinstall is needed.

Do I need Shopify's Carrier Calculated Shipping API for ShipEasy?

Not for the first hour. ShipEasy's own rate tables use the weights and prices you enter, not live carrier APIs. The API becomes relevant only if you want real-time delivery dates or live carrier rates at checkout, which is a paid-tier feature in ShipEasy and a second-week decision.

Can I have separate shipping rates for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

Technically yes, but it is over-engineering for a new shop. Royal Mail does not surcharge remote postcodes at all, so if it is your only carrier, splitting by region buys you nothing. Add postcode overrides within one UK zone when a real Evri or DPD surcharge makes them necessary, not before.

How long does a typical Shopify shipping set-up take?

With your dispatch postcode, product weights, and carrier rate card ready, the core set-up takes 30 to 45 minutes. The remaining 15 minutes go to a test order and rate check. Without those three prepared inputs, the same task takes two hours or more because you keep leaving the app to look up weights.
