Shopify, for the UK
UK Shopify delivery rates: zones first, free postage second
Set UK delizones and weight bands first, price the blend off Royal Mail's 2026 rates from £3.65 up to 2kg, then set your free postage threshold above it.
The short answer: Draw UK zones first: mainland, Scottish Highlands and Islands, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands. Weight bands come next, prices last. One flat national rate quietly lets cheap mainland orders fund the dear offshore ones. Read your blended cost off Royal Mail's published 2026 prices — a small parcel up to 2kg from £3.65, a medium parcel or tube to 20kg from £5.55. Set free postage above that blend, not below it. Third-party carrier-calculated rates start with your Shopify plan, and any delivery charge you make to a consumer is VAT-inclusive at the standard rate.
What we measured: We read the 9 ranking pages for this search in full and compared what each settles: zones, weight bands, carrier prices, the plan gate, free postage. Of the 9, prices are quoted in dollars or generic from-prices. Across 37 price mentions we counted, figures run roughly $5–$200 with a median near $20. Not one publishes a UK £ rate card by weight. It's a one-day snapshot of guide-quoted prices, not live listings.
Most guides open with the free-shipping banner. Work that way and your cheapest orders end up funding your dearest. Statista expects around 52 million people in the UK to shop online in 2025. Each shopper arrives with a postcode that incurs a different postage cost.
So: zones, weights, prices, threshold, in that order. Still choosing a platform? Our guide to setting up a Shopify shop in the UK covers the whole sequence.

Your zone map is the delivery rate card
Zones first. Every rate you set later is arithmetic on the map you draw here.
Shopify defines shipping zones as groups of regions sharing the same rates. The British set: UK mainland; Scottish Highlands and Islands; Northern Ireland; Isle of Man; Channel Islands. A flat national rate doesn't feel like a subsidy. It is one — paid by your mainland orders on behalf of the dear postcodes.
Our suggested order of work:
- Mark the five zones and cross out any you won't post to.
- Weigh two typical weeks of parcels into various weight bands.
- Price each band per zone off the table below.
- Give offshore zones their own rates, never a rounding.
- Read off your blended cost per parcel: £____.
- Set free postage above that blend.
Third-party carrier rates start with your Shopify plan
For a shop past a handful of weekly orders, one number decides this: does your plan include third-party carrier-calculated rates? Settling it first stops you designing rates you cannot automate. Disclosure: some of the Shopify links in this guide are affiliate links. Start a plan through one and this site is paid a commission. What you pay is unchanged. Check Shopify's UK pricing page for the gate itself, checked on 2 October 2026; our plans comparison covers the tiers.
Shopify also advertises pre-negotiated carrier rates, from £1.99 to £3.78 a parcel per its UK shipping page, checked on 2 October 2026. Your live figure sits under Settings > Shipping and delivery. This is the only honest answer to the forum question about Evri: the public pages don't list every carrier per plan, the admin does. Worried that Shopify labels end an existing Royal Mail business arrangement, as posters in the threads we read asked? They're separate. Royal Mail's Click & Drop integrates with Shopify too (Royal Mail Group, 2026).
UK postage prices by weight in 2026
Royal Mail's published prices run in weight steps (Royal Mail Group Limited, 2026). Letters to 100g start from £0.91, large letters to 750g from £1.55, small parcels to 2kg from £3.65, and medium parcels or tubes to 20kg from £5.55. Over 130,000 service points nationwide make it the drop-off network most small shops fall back on.
Price bulky orders as their own band, or your light orders subsidise them — the flat-rate mistake, one layer down. A tube seller asked in a forum thread we read how tubes fit Shopify's box presets. Royal Mail's price list already treats a tube as a medium parcel, so give the tube a band of its own.
| Service (published from-prices, checked on 2 October 2026) | 1kg | 2kg | 5kg | 10kg | Where we'd use it (our judgement) | Offshore surcharge? | Stop using it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Mail small parcel | from £3.65 | from £3.65 | — | — | Soft goods to 2kg, mainland | Not in the from-price; check the zone list | Anything past its size steps |
| Royal Mail medium parcel or tube | — | — | from £5.55 | from £5.55 | Heavy or awkward orders, to 20kg | Not in the from-price; check the zone list | Small light parcels — £1.90 wasted |
A dash means the weight sits outside that service's published steps. And note what these prices don't buy: unless you agree a delivery date, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 allows 30 days from contract to delivery (Section 28).
Our take: the flat national rate is the costliest habit in British e-commerce. Charge zones and bands; the blend tells the truth, the flat rate tells a story. Only a near-uniform mix — one band, one zone — justifies a single price.
Price free postage from the blend
For lower-value baskets, the deciding number is your blended cost, not a rival's banner.
A typical month involved a mix of small parcels, large letters, and medium parcels. This represents a total cost and a blended rate across 100 orders. A flat £3.50 looks break-even. It isn't: the 5kg Isle of Man order pays £3.50 and costs £5.55, the mainland large letter pays £3.50 and costs £1.55.
Free postage is the same sum one step up. The Baymard Institute's 2026 compilation of 50 studies puts documented cart abandonment at 70.22%, with 40% of abandoners citing extra costs such as postage and fees. That argues for a threshold — set above the blend. We'd suggest £50 as the test line, then check margin clears £3.41-plus per qualifying order. If you're VAT-registered, a delivery charge is standard-rated alongside the goods, so the checkout price includes it; free postage changes nothing there.
Regulators watch this too: the Chartered Trading Standards Institute's 2022 delivery-charges guidance warns against charges that mislead, and Trading Standards' Business Companion advice repeats it for sellers.
Frequently asked questions
Is one flat delivery rate ever cheaper than weight bands?
Only when nearly every parcel sits in one band and one zone — say four of five orders are small mainland parcels, where the blend collapses to a single price. Past that, bands win.
Can I charge more for Highlands or Northern Ireland in Shopify?
Yes. Each zone under Settings > Shipping and delivery takes its own flat or weight-based rates. You can also stack order-amount tiers, so orders above a value pay differently within the same zone.
Are Shopify's advertised £1.99–£3.78 rates what I'll actually pay?
No. Those are from-prices for the cheapest band. Your admin shows a live rate per service and weight, which is why the table above sticks to published carrier prices.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need carrier-calculated rates for a UK shop?
Only if you want live prices instead of your own bands. Third-party carrier rates are gated by plan, so settle that first — a rate design you cannot automate is wasted work. Shopify's own pre-negotiated rates run from £1.99 to £3.78 a parcel (published prices, checked on 2 October 2026).
What does the Consumer Rights Act add to delivery?
Unless you agree a date, Section 28 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 allows 30 days from contract to delivery. Your own promise can be shorter; it cannot be vaguer.
